With summer here, Hampshire County Council is supporting the Government’s national campaign which highlights the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol.
Councillor Rob Humby, Executive Member for Environment and Transport at Hampshire County Council, said, “Keeping Hampshire’s roads safe for everybody is our priority. We are supporting the national Think campaign to highlight to all drivers the consequences of drink and drug driving, and our road safety team is working with colleges and event organisers to encourage drivers to plan ahead, and learn more about when it is safe to drive after a night out. It takes a lot longer than some people might think for alcohol to pass through the body.”
Some examples of approximately how long it takes after drinking to be safe to drive:
•Four cans of cider / lager (5%) - 11 hours
•Bottle of wine (15%) – 13 hours
•Four double shots – 13 hours
Hampshire County Council is promoting the ‘morning after app’ – an online calculator which can be downloaded from Google Play and the App store which allows people to monitor what alcohol is still in their system from the night before, and whether they are still over the drink driving limit.
Councillor Humby continued: “We are also supporting the Government’s campaign about the dangers of driving under the influence of drugs, with the Police now able to identify drug drivers with a roadside swab.”
