Wetwheels Hamble is an accessible for all powerboat based at MDL’s Mercury Yacht Harbour on the Hamble River. 2019 was our third full year of operation getting a 1000 participants out on the water, including injured service personnel, children with disabilities, Alzheimer and dementia sufferers and those who just want to enjoy a trip out with a loved one who has limited mobility.
The ‘Wetwheels Experience’ takes approximately 100 minutes, starting with a trip down the river Hamble, followed by a blast around the Solent, giving all participants the opportunity to drive the boat (even from a wheelchair) carefully managed by the skipper of course! This certainly puts smiles on faces and that is what it is all about.
A Community Interest Company, Wetwheels Hamble is licenced by the Wetwheels Foundation, a national charity with the aim of providing the opportunity for disabled and disadvantaged people to experience and enjoy power boating and thereby improve their aspirations and ability to enjoy life to the full.
The boat is a Cheetah catamaran fitted with twin 325hp Suzuki engines with a maximum speed of 40 knots. Wheelchair access is provided by a side opening door with a ramp and she is fully certified for operations up to 60 miles from shore.
There are a wide range of options for chartering Wetwheels Hamble including family outings, fishing, sea ceremonies and sightseeing trips in which each person can share experiences, challenge their self-perceptions, extend their horizons and discover new opportunities.
The boat can also be used as a floating classroom, media support platform, marine environmental studies and for race management.
